New iPhone App Documents Police During Arrests

Did you know that you can download an app to your iPhone that will allow you to document your interaction with police if you are arrested? The app is called “Police" and can be added to your phone if you have already downloaded the "shortcuts" app and the most recent Apple update.

The app was created by Robert Petersen, of Arizona, after he continued to notice media reports about traffic stop and arrest disputes between cops and civilians. Speaking to USA Today about the new app, Peterson said, “My only goal with the Police shortcut is trying to help people stay safe and honest. (Most) of the time, you’ll never need it, but if you end up in a situation where it ended up being a good idea, you’ll be thankful you did.”

How the App Works

If you are stopped by police, just say, "Hey Siri, I'm getting pulled over," to activate the app. The program will then pause any music, dim the brightness of the screen, and put your phone into Do Not Disturb mode. Siri will also alert a designated emergency contact via text message to let them know about your situation. The camera on the front of the phone will switch on and record your interaction with police. After the user stops the recording, a copy is sent to the emergency contact and the phone returns to its normal settings.

Android users can use similar applications to record police encounters and notify emergency contacts. In fact, the American Civil Liberties Union created ACLU Blue to help Android users document police interactions.
